Trucking Drives the Economy

Employment:

In 2011, Kentucky's trucking industry provided 104,910 jobs or one out of 14 in the state. Total trucking wages paid in 2011 exceeded $4.3 billion with an average annual trucking industry salary of $41,404. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported in May 2011 that truck drivers, heavy, tractor-trailer and light, delivery drivers, held 37,900 jobs with a mean annual salary of $35,565.

Small Business Emphasis:

Large and small supporting businesses serve over 11,550 Kentucky's trucking companies either small or locally owned businesses.

Transportation of Essential Products:

The state's 77% of total manufactured tonnage is transported or 355,305 tons per day in 2010 and over 89% of Kentucky communities depend on trucks to move their goods.

Trucking Pays the Freight

As an Industry:

Kentucky's trucking industry paid around $675 million in federal and state roadway taxes and fees in 2009. The industry pays 43% of all taxes and fees owed by Kentucky motorists, despite trucks traveled only 14% of vehicle miles in the state.

Individual Companies:

In January 2013, a five-axle tractor with a semitrailer combination paid $10,815 of state highway use fees and taxes in addition to $8,906 of federal highway use fees and taxes. The taxes were over and above the normal taxes paid by Kentucky's businesses.

Roadway Use:

At Kentucky in 2008, motorists traveled 48 billion miles, and the trucks traveled 6.6 billion miles on Kentucky's 78,748 miles of public roads.
